Cornell Box

Initial Idea

My initial idea is inspired by the concept of lightboxes and the beautiful works of Korean Artist 이정록. I want to combine these two concepts to create a dreamy, fantasy-like environment. I am also keen on portraying my zodiac animal, the tiger, as well as my spirit animal, bunnies.

Assets

There are a few ways to create the general foliage.

  1. Using 2D Assets

  2. Using 3D Assets with unlit materials, disabling shadows, and orthographic camera

  3. Using Unreal Engine’s Procedural Foliage

3D assets and Unreal Engine’s Procedural Foliage will be the better options if I were to add animations.

As I am very skilled with Unity, I thought Unreal Engine would be similar and easy to catch up on. I soon realized that Unreal was far more complex than I anticipated. Working with materials was one of the hardest aspects of this project. I tried to create a convincing moon with my current knowledge but failed to properly create the right material for the rice paper. Instead, I created a black material with a bit of opacity to let the light through. With more knowledge and experience, I want to revisit this project to bring my original concept to life.

The complexities of Unreal Engine only made me more motivated and in awe of its possibilities.
